Jesus preached a different message than people were used to, and so, people would often argue with him. Do we try to argue with Jesus today by trying live in a little cocoon faith of our own making, or are we open to the message of Jesus as it is lived and preached by the Church today?

Jesus tells us to persist in prayer, and God will answer. St. Teresa of Avila spoke to God as a friend, and we might try this sort of prayer as a way to draw ourselves closer to God.
