In this "A Word of Hope" for Wednesday of Holy Week, Fr. Scott Steinkerchner, OP explores the profound difference between Judas's and Peter's responses to their failures during Jesus's Passion.
While Judas repented of betraying Jesus (Matthew 26-27), he ultimately despaired, unable to believe in forgiveness. Peter, after denying Christ three times, remained open to God's mercy, eventually experiencing restoration through Jesus's love after the Resurrection (John 21). Both apostles failed, but only one held onto the possibility of hope.
This reflection reminds us that although we inevitably fail, God's forgiveness is always within reach. The key is to avoid despair, keep our connection with God open, and trust in His boundless mercy. Even in the darkest times, hope in God's light persists. Let this message strengthen your Holy Week journey.
