O Magnum Mysterium
Student friars from the Provinces of St. Albert the Great and St. Martin de Porres, under the direction of Br. Matthew Paul Grote, celebrated the birth of Jesus on Christmas Day with a stunning rendition of O Magnum Mysterium (arranged by Morten Lauridsen). The friars practiced for days to perfect the music and it was a fitting and beautiful post-communion meditation. Truly it is a great and wonderful mystery that our God should pitch his tent among us. Merry Christmas!
See below for both the Latin and English text for the hymn.
Latin text:
O magnum mysterium,
et admirabile sacramentum,
ut animalia viderent Dominum natum,
iacentem in praesepio!
O beata virgo, cuius viscera
meruerunt portare
Dominum Iesum Christum.
Alleluia!
English translation:
O great mystery,
and wonderful sacrament,
that animals should see the newborn Lord,
lying in a manger!
O blessed virgin, whose womb
was worthy to bear
the Lord Jesus Christ.
Alleluia!
