The Provincial Council of the Province of St. Albert the Great recently announced the appointment of Fr. David Caron, O.P., as interim President of Aquinas Institute of Theology, effective August 15, 2012. In making the appointment, the Council accepted the recommendation of the Aquinas Institute Board of Trustees. The Presidential Search Committee, chaired by Aquinas Board member Sandy Johnson, expressed their strong endorsement of Fr. Caron’s experience, skills and energy. This appointment extends until June 30, 2013, at which time a permanent president will be named.
Fr. Charles Bouchard, O.P., Provincial of the Province of St. Albert the Great, expressed gratitude to the Board for its thorough work. “Aquinas Institute has an excellent board, and they did a great job of assessing the situation and arriving at a solid recommendation, especially given the limited time frame,” Fr. Bouchard noted. Though Fr. Caron is not a member of the Province of St. Albert, Fr. Bouchard and Fr. Chris Eggleton, O.P, Provincial of the Dominican Southern Province of St. Martin de Porres, agree Fr. Caron’s appointment serves as an excellent example of the kind of collaboration the two provinces seek. “Working together will strengthen us and will enable us to serve the Church better,” they said.
Fr. Caron, initially ordained a diocesan priest, was solemnly professed as a Dominican of the Province of St. Martin de Porres in May 2003. He taught at Aquinas Institute and St. Louis University before becoming the director of the Center for Dominican Studies at Barry University in Miami, Florida, and teaching as an adjunct professor for Barry’s Department of Philosophy and Theology. Since 2010, Caron has been serving the Southern Province as Socius.
Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, the only Catholic Institution to offer a Doctorate in preaching, is sponsored by the Dominican friars of the Province of St. Albert the Great. Priesthood candidates at the school prepare for ordination alongside vowed religious and lay people pursuing careers in the Catholic Church or simply seeking a richer faith life. Aquinas Institute of Theology, once housed in River Forest, IL and later in Dubuque, IA, has been a ministry of the Province of St. Albert the Great for over many decades and a primary source of theological education for every Dominican in the Province since its founding.
