We declare that the Order will celebrate a Jubilee Year with the theme “Sent to preach the Gospel.” This marks the issuing of the Bulls promulgated by Pope Honorius III eight centuries ago, confirming the foundation of the Order, in 1216 and 1217.
~Acts of the 2013 General Chapter
In 1216, St. Dominic de Guzman established the Order of Preachers and sent his first friars out to preach the Gospel for the salvation of souls. Until this time, religious life was lived almost completely within the walls of the monastery. It was rare to see religious engaged in the world. St. Dominic’s vision caught on quickly, and the mission is alive and well throughout the world today.
As we celebrate our 800th Jubilee, the Order “seeks to renew itself by entering into a dynamic process that culminates in sending the friars to preach anew.” In this work of renewal, the Order has asked us to reflect on these questions: “By whom are we sent? To whom are we sent? With whom are we sent? What do we bring with us in being sent?” Throughout the year, we in the Central Province will be exploring these questions—the ways in which our preaching takes form; where we have been and where we are going; and how you take part in this mission.
