When Fr. Jim Marchionda, O.P. was elected Prior Provincial in St. Louis on June 17th, he also became an ex-officio member of the Provincial Council. Similarly, though Fr. Charles Bouchard, O.P. completed his four year term as Prior Provincial, he will stay on to help guide the province, as will the Regent of Studies, who has yet to be approved by Fr. Bruno Cadoré, O.P., Master General of the Order of Preachers.
The Provincial Council is comprised of friars representing the entire region covered by the Province of St. Albert the Great (Central Province, USA). It includes the four diffinitors, men chosen to scrutinize all the work undertaken during the weeks-long meetings before producing the official Acts of the 19th Provincial Chapter. The diffinitors are Fr. David Wright, O.P. (St. Dominic Parish, Denver, CO), Fr. Kevin Niehoff, O.P. (Canon Lawyer, Grand Rapids, MI), Fr. Leobardo Almazan, O.P. (St. Dominic Priory, St. Louis, MO), and Br. Paul Byrd, O.P. (Fenwick High School, Oak Park, IL).
To round out the 10-man Provincial Council, three more friars were selected during the Chapter. Father Jim Spahn, O.P. (Holy Rosary Parish, Minneapolis, MN), Fr. Simon-Felix Michalski, O.P. (Blessed Sacrament Parish, Madison, WI), and Fr. Tom O’Meara, O.P. (Blessed Sacrament Priory, Madison, WI) will serve four year terms on the council until the next Provincial Chapter is held in 2019.
