Rev. Benjamin Joseph Russell, O.P. died on August 11, 2014 in Chicago, Illinois. Father Russell was born on July 24, 1933 in Boston, Massachusetts. He made his religious profession as a Dominican friar and given the name Benjamin on August 31, 1954. He was ordained on June 4, 1960.
Father Russell taught at Fenwick High School, Rosary College (River Forest, IL), Edgewood College (Madison, WI) and Aquinas Institute of Philosophy, where he was also Master of Students for the Dominican Community. He was Pastor at Blessed Sacrament Parish (Madison, WI) from 1971-77 and Pastor at St. Vincent Ferrer Parish (River Forest, IL) from 1990-96, before retiring to limited service and eventually becoming Superior at the St. Thomas Aquinas Community in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Father Russell is survived by one brother, Thomas (Mary Ann) Russell and numerous nieces and nephews, and is preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Joseph.
Services are at St. Vincent Ferrer Church in River Forest, Illinois on Saturday, August 16, 2014, beginning with the reception of the body and Office of the Dead at 8:30AM and visitation from 9:00-10:00AM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00AM followed by interment at All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines, Illinois.
