Father Thomas McGonigle, O.P., died on August 4, 2015 in Chicago, Illinois. Father McGonigle was born on March 16, 1941 in Denver, Colorado to Thomas McGonigle and Elizabeth Eckert. In Denver, he attended Cathedral, St. Louis, and Loyola Grade Schools, and St. Francis de Sales High School.
Father McGonigle was a member of the Dominicans, Order of Preachers, Province of St. Albert the Great, based in Chicago, IL. He entered the Dominican Novitiate in 1962, making first profession on August 31 at St. Peter Martyr Priory in Winona, MN. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Aquinas Institute of Theology in 1964, and a year later earned a Master of Arts degree in Philosophy there as well, where he would teach from 1970-81. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 25, 1968 at St. Rose Priory in Dubuque, IA.
Father McGonigle earned a doctorate in theology from the Divinity School of Harvard in 1976. He returned to teaching at Aquinas Institute of Theology and became its fourth president in 1978. When Aquinas Institute moved from Dubuque to St. Louis, MO, Fr. McGonigle became Chaplain at St. Clara Convent, the Dominican Motherhouse in Sinsinawa, Wisconsin (the Mound) and adjunct professor at Wartburg Theological Seminary and the University of Dubuque (Iowa) from 1981-85.
For much of the next 20 years, spent over two periods (1985-87 and 1993-2010), Fr. McGonigle served at Providence College in Rhode Island. He was a tenured professor in the History department as well as Vice President for Academic Administration.
Father McGonigle served as a member of the Provincial Council, as well as the Intellectual Life Commission, was named the Central Province’s Regent of Studies in 1990 and served Chicago’s Catholic Theological Union as Vice President, Academic Dean, and Associate Professor of Spirituality from 1987-93.
Besides his Dominican Community, Fr. McGonigle is survived by a half-brother (Paul Coons) and half-sister (Vickie Coons).
Services will be held at St. Vincent Ferrer Church in River Forest, Illinois on Thursday, August 13, 2015. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00AM preceded by Sung Morning Prayer at 9:00AM.
