Rev. Joseph C. Fogarty, O.P., 85, died on January 26, 2016 in Chicago.
Fr. Fogarty was born March 8, 1930 in Chicago to Patrick and Catherine (Clifford) Fogarty. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William Fogarty. He attended St. Sabina Grammar School and graduated from Leo High School in 1948. Fr. Fogarty studied at Loyola University, Chicago for two years before he entering the Dominican Order in August 1952 and given the religious name, Charles.
He professed his first vows on August 31, 1953 and continued his studies for the priesthood at the Dominican House of Studies in River Forest and at St. Rose Priory in Dubuque, Iowa and was ordained on May 23, 1959 in Dubuque. Fr. Fogarty studied at DePaul University, Providence College, and Notre Dame University earning Masters Degrees in English, Religious Studies, and Liturgy. He taught English at Fenwick High School from 1964-78 and was involved in the hockey program. From 1979-88 he ministered at parishes and hospitals in MN as well as chaplain for the Dominican Sisters in Grand Rapids, MI (1981-84). He was the Director of the Office of Liturgy for the Diocese of Gary from 1988-92, then chaplain at the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse in Sinsinawa, WI until 2000. For the next three years served as parochial vicar at St. Gertrude Parish in St. Clair Shores, MI.
In 2003 was assigned to St. Pius V Priory in Chicago on limited service and was living the past year at Resurrection Life Center in Chicago where he died. Along with the Dominican Community, he is survived by two sisters, Mary Smith of Sausalito, CA and Catherine Busam of Florida as well as four nieces. Services were held at St. Vincent Ferrer Church in River Forest, IL on Saturday, January 30, 2016. Memorial Donations to the Dominican Friars, Central Province, 1910 S.
