Father Gregory Moore, O.P., died on April 16, 2016 in Chicago, Illinois. At the age of 96, Father Moore was the oldest living Dominican Friar in Province of St. Albert the Great (Central Province, USA). Born on October 23, 1919 in Chicago, Illinois to John Moore and Elsie Moore (Kenneally), he attended Maternity Blessed Virgin Mary School, De Paul Academy and St. Mel High School.
From 1937 to 1948, Father Moore attended classes at Northwestern University, De Paul University, Loyola University and Georgetown University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Foreign Service. During that time, he also served in the U.S. Navy (1942-49), including active service aboard the USS Oyster Bay.
Father Moore entered the Dominicans in 1949, making first profession on September 30, 1950 at St. Peter Martyr Priory in Winona, MN. In 1952, he earned a Bachelor degree in Philosophy from the Dominican College of St. Rose (later to be renamed the Aquinas Institute) in Dubuque, Iowa. A year later, he earned his Licentiate Degree in Philosophy there as well. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 10, 1955 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco, California. Then, continuing his studies at Aquinas Institute, he earned a Master of Arts degree in Philosophy in 1957.
Father Moore played an integral role in establishing the Dominican Order in Nigeria. He served St. Dominic’s Church in Yaba, Lagos, Nigeria from 1957-64, before returning to Chicago as Promoter of the St. Dominic Mission Society. In 1967, he returned to Nigeria to help establish a Novitiate and serve as Novice Master for first-year Dominicans. Returning to Lagos in 1968, he remained in service until 1982.
Challenged by various health issues, Fr. Moore again returned to Chicago, where he was assigned to St. Pius V Priory. For the next several decades, he served as a parish supply priest in Michigan, Colorado, Illinois, and Iowa, also serving Dominican parishes in Madison, Wisconsin and Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Besides his Dominican Community, Fr. Moore is survived by 10 nephews and two nieces from Ft. Snelling, MN, four nephews and eight nieces from Chicago, first cousins, Rose Hickey and Fr. Bill Kenneally from Chicago, Martin Moore and Mary Moore from Counties Meath and Dublin and Michael Kenneally and Kitty O’Mahony of Counties Tipperary and Waterford in Ireland. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elsie (Kenneally) and John Moore, his brothers, William and Thomas, and his sister, Patricia (Flotkoetter) and her son, Chuck Flotkoetter.
Services were held at St. Vincent Ferrer Church in River Forest, Illinois on Friday, April 22. Memorial Donations to the Dominican Friars, Central Province, 1910 S. Ashland Ave, Chicago, IL, 60608-2904 are greatly appreciated.
